Spider Wearing Glasses? - Agelenopsis

Spider Wearing Glasses? - Agelenopsis
Stephens County, Oklahoma, USA
July 17, 2010
I'm primarily curious if someone can explain the two loops that the spider appears to be "holding" in his pedipalps. Are these part of his anatomy or are these his spectacles for navigating the bed he was found in?

genus Agelenopsis
numerous species. If those are indeed glasses, do we call it 16 eyes?

Male spider
It's a male spider, and the spectacles are its mating apparatus, part of
its palps. One of these is inserted into the underside of the abdomen of
a femal spider to insert semen.

Fascinating. Thank you.
