A Bald Robber Fly? - Diogmites neoternatus

A Bald Robber Fly? - Diogmites neoternatus
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 9, 2007
Maybe this guy just took his bumblebee suit off because it was so blooming hot and humid?

Maybe not a robber fly but something else?

On sunny, stone path at 9:30 am.
85 deg F headed for 95.

Thanks to all
Yes they are fun to photo and watch, but also to read about so thanks for the ID.
I hope to find one "hanging out" with its prey.

Too bad some group has not given fun common names to robber flies like was done for dragonflies.
Would make it more fun when giving talks.

By-the-way:
Why are they called ROBBER flies?
Who gets robbed?

Re: fun common names
We've definitely had some fun nick-names here, skewed towards seventies rockers:

Jerry Garcia - hairy face
ZZ Top - long beard
Sonny (Bono) - fur vest

Maybe they need robber names - Dillinger, Baby Face, etc.

Diog
Bright orange abdomen with the narrow proximal segments is D neoternatus. They must be everywhere.

Diogmites
This is a not-so-hairy robber fly in the genus Diogmites. Often called hanging robbers because they tend to eat while hanging from vegetation by the first pair of legs. Maybe Herschel can ID this to species. I have virtually no experience with these.

Nice shots.
Aren't these fun to photograph?
