I found and collected a few of these in Michigan recently. A few days later an adult emerged from one of them, but I assume that was an inquiline (or predator?) since you had a larva emerge, as would be expected for this sort of gall.

I'm guessing these are midge galls. They all seem to be abandoned, and I didn't see any larvae in the vial.

I had a little bit of soil, s
I had a little bit of soil, so I put the one larva that had emerged in the soil. I hope it will do ok. I decided to keep it, as it seemed risky to send it in the vial of soil. I looked for more today, and I found only abandoned galls--I think its season may already be over.

One generation
It's very likely that there is just one generation per year, and that the adult won't emerge until next spring. I'll keep an eye out for these up here over the next few weeks.
