Horse Flies

Horse Flies
Fremont Peak State Park near San Juan Bautista, San Benito County, California, USA
August 11, 2007
Size: 3-3.5cm
These mating insects were on dried grass near the peak.

Horse flies
These are mating horse flies. Too dark to tell what species.

Uncertain, but I don't think these are syrphids.
Just checked several pages of posts here. None showed syrphids mating end-to-end, and I've never seen them arranged that way in the wild, either. Shape of abdomen also strikes me as different, but I'm no expert.

Tabanids.
These are horse flies of some kind, family Tabanidae.
