Phyciodes

Phyciodes
Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, USA
June 30, 2007
This butterfly was about as big as a aphrodite fritillary...and it flew away before I could really focus.

Tawny
I wish we could've see the ventral side, because my thoughts were this looks like a rather worn Tawny Crescent, Phyciodes batesii.

Moved from Butterflies.

Abberant Pearl Crescent
Northern Crescent is very rare on the east coast, doubtful unless found in a very native undisturbed habitat. The reason you didn't find it in a field guide is that this one is unusually marked (abrrerant)

In Vermont
Your odds of a Northern climb significantly. And this would have to be an aberrant female Pearl. I think the distal clear space on the forewing is too wide for the Pearl in this specimen but some think these two are not separable by photos anyway.

Field Crescent
I believe this is a Field Crescent. Compare:

Not in Vermont
Field is a western species.

Phyciodes Crescent
Either Pearl or Northern. The two are extremely similar or the same species, depending on where the taxonomy stands now (but who has the time or energy to keep track?).

Looks
Like a Northern Crescent.

Northenn Crescent
How big is a Northern Cresent? This guy is as big or bigger than
a fritillary. Thanks for your comments! I went on your RNA website,
but I couldn't get in! I will try again! Looks fascinating.

Traffic jam
In the daytime sometimes. It should be clear now. I just checked.

Size
Could you give an estimate on the size of it's wingspan? This sounds interesting!

She compared
It to an Aphrodite. But Frits are so variable in size. As are Crescents.
