little fly - Tomoplagia

Size: 1/8 "

I found this tiny fly in the morning on a piece of grass . My camera had a hard time focusing on it since it is so small . This is the first time that I have seen a fly with that long extension ( ovipositor ? ) on it's rear . It was a pretty speckled fly with nicely banded wings . I would appreciate any comments to help in identification , thanks ... Beth the shutterbug

Tomoplagia

This is a female Tomoplagia species. The yellow diagonal banding of the wings is typical for this genus. I believe it is Tomoplagia cressoni because of where it was found, and the apparent dark spot on the apex of the scutellum.

Tephritidae

Definitely family Tephritidae, the Fruit Flies. Ovipositors are common in this group, as are those nice banded wings. I'm not great at generic recognition, but this reminds me of the genus Orellia, which is pretty common.
