Beetle of some sort? - Ergates spiculatus

Beetle of some sort? - Ergates spiculatus
Veneta, around protected wet land areas, Oregon, USA
August 14, 2007
Size: approx. 3.5 to 4 inches
My lawn guy pointed this our to me and didn't know what it was. He was concerned that maybe these things were wood eaters and snacking on my new home. Please let me know what they are and if I should be concerned.

Indeed,
great find! I'm envious :-) Welcome to bugguide, by the way.

Ponderous borer:-)
No, seriously, that is the common name of Ergates spiculatus, the largest beetle in the Pacific Northwest. Congrats, in my 27 years growing up in Oregon I never saw one of these. No need to be concerned, they do not bore in homes, just dead and dying conifers, around the roots mostly.
