Velvet ant of some kind? - Dasymutilla

Velvet ant of some kind? - Dasymutilla
Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA
August 15, 2007
Size: 5mm
Looking through the photos, it bears some resemblance to Dasymutilla alesia and maybe to Pseudomethoca simillima, in terms of color and pattern.

Dasymutilla gibbosa?
I would have to guess D. gibbosa for this ID. The general head shape and color pattern are somewhat distinct, but very similar to the 5 or six other species that live in that area. To get an accurate identification I would need to look for ridges and bumps on multiple different body regions with a microscope.

Thanks
Thanks Kevin for the help! Love these guys. They move so fast though it's hard to get a decent photo of them.

Dasymutilla sp.
It is in the genus Dasymutilla, but I don't know what species it is.

Thanks
Thanks George!
