Hoverfly ... Sphaerophoria ? - Allograpta obliqua - female

Hoverfly ... Sphaerophoria ? - Allograpta obliqua - Female
Manteca, San joaquin County, California, USA
August 15, 2007
Size: 3/8"
There are many types of Hoverflys hovering about . This one has an extra distinctive , vivid pattern and beautiful golden/maroon thorax . It is a female since I observed it laying one smll egg on the end of a leaf . It flew from leaf to leaf and when it landed it would fling it's abdomen up and down and whirl it's hind legs around the ovipositor . This procedure took about 10 seconds and then an egg was deposited on the leaf . I would like to know how many different Hover flys there are and if this one has been documented . Thanks for any comments , Beth the shutterbug

Moved from obliqua or exotica.

Markings on tergite 2 are consistent with obliqua; see:

An excellent guess, based on abdomen shape.
However, it's the similarly shaped Allograpta obliqua. Love those syrphids! Glad you're taking notice of them and turning in such choice photos, Beth.
