leafhopper - Otiocerus degeeri

leafhopper - Otiocerus degeeri
Heyburn State Park, Benewah County, Idaho, USA
August 2, 2007
Size: 1/2 inch
This very odd creature was attracted to the lights of a building, along with all the moths. At first I thought it was a moth, as it fluttered about the light. But then I realized it was powering off the wall in strong leaps before flying, so I knew I had someone different. My wild guess is some type of leafhopper or treehopper, but I have never seen even a picture resembling this. The details of its wings are so intricate.

Derbidae
You're right! Probably the same species as this. Nice photo.

Thanks very much. This is one of my favorite insects of the year so far and I am very glad to know what it is.
