slender robber fly - Dioctria hyalipennis

slender robber fly - Dioctria hyalipennis
London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
June 19, 2004
Size: about 10 mm
On ornamental shrub in suburban back yard. I think this is Dioctria baumhaueri, the only Dioctria species in Ontario, maybe introduced from Europe? Note the yellow halteres.

Dioctria, yes
The identification of Dioctria is correct. However, about the species I cannot say much. Your suggestion could be right, though the name is not up to date anymore. According to the most recent lists, D. baumhaueri is a synonym of D. hyalipennis. Such synonymies only slowly seep from European continental literature into the British and vice versa. At what speed it then may cross the ocean...
D. baumhaueri is only a colour form of D. hyalipennis.

Dioctria
Thanks, Paul. Do you know of an online reference source that discusses the current status of baumhaueri/hyalipennis? All I could find was The Diptera Site, showing D. baumhaueri as having a North American distribution, and D. hyalipennis as having a European & African distribution.

confusing
Well, first I wonder how I should read the distribution data of the Nomenclator:
baumhaueri: (PA: NE PA) Ont. to Que., s. to Mich. &Pa.
hyalipennis: (PA: PA) Europe: North Africa: Tun

I assume the first PA should be HA for Holarctic, since PA should mean Palaearctic. Then further for baumhaueri is says at the end '&Pa.' which I interpret as 'and Palaearctic', which would fit with the 'PA: NE PA' at the beginning of the line. That the species should occur in Europe is clear from the type locality 'Europe'.

There are now several publications that cite baumhaueri as synonym of hyalipennis, e.g., the Dutch and German checklists (see http://www.diptera.info/readarticle.php?article_id=6 for the references). The German list can be consulted on http://www.geller-grimm.de/german.htm#check.

Fritz Geller-Grimm has a website on Asilidae. Check the systematic database for Dioctria hyalipennis on the page http://www.geller-grimm.de/catalog/species.htm.

Another paper discussing it is the one cited below, though I have not seen it.

Smart, M.J., 2003. [Comments on when and by whom Dioctria baumhaueri and D. hyalipennis were synonymised]. In: Corrections and changes to the Diptera checklist (9). - Dipterists Digest 10(1): 58-60 (59).

Good work
Thanks, Paul, for the links and clarification. I've included the info in the Guide page for D. hyalipennis.
