Beefly ? - Heterostylum

Beefly ? - Heterostylum
Manteca, San joaquin County, California, USA
July 1, 2007
Size: 1/2"
I have only seen this fuzzy fellow 2 times . Wow , what a long tongue ! I was amazed at how beautifully it hovered while dipping into the Lantana flower . When he flew past me I heard a very loud buzzing sound . Is this a common Bee ?

Moved
Moved from Bee Flies.

Heterostylum
The Bombylius-like appearance and the indented hind margin of the eye suggest this is a Heterostylum species.

Definitely a bee fly
Definitely not stopping to pose. (Often on these, you need to show wing veins to get a ID. Maybe not with this one, though.)
