unknown grasshopper - Schistocerca

unknown grasshopper - Schistocerca
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Chase County, Kansas, USA
July 13, 2007
Size: 1 2/3 inches long
I dearly hope someone can ID this extraordinary species. As these 2 pictures show, individuals varied in the amount of black spotting. I checked Poecilotettix pantherina, but have ruled that out. I can find nothing to match. They were abundant in the pristine tallgrass prairie protected in the Flint Hills area of eastern Kansas. One of the most insect rich areas imaginable, especially in midsummer.

Schistocerca lineata
While the nymphs are very difficult to identify, the location and habitat make it almost certain that this is the species. The long antennae alone would narrow it down to this or S. obscura.

Thank you very much.
I had almost given up on this one, as no one had a species ID. Very much appreciated!

you're welcome
I'm not willing to put a species on most of these nymphs, at least not until I learn a lot more. But, every now and then one stands out that I can identify.

Schisto
May be a Birdwing nymph. As in my shot

Very similar
The one you show is less spotted but overall very close, that my well be it.
