Two-striped Grasshoppers - Melanoplus bivittatus - male - female

Two-striped Grasshoppers - Melanoplus bivittatus - Male Female
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Chase County, Kansas, USA
July 13, 2007
Size: 1 3/4 inches long
These mating grasshoppers resembled Melanoplus ponderosus, but with enough minor differences that I wanted to get some confirmation. They were abundant in the pristine tallgrass prairie protected in the Flint Hills area of eastern Kansas. One of the most insect rich areas imaginable, especially in midsummer.

Moved from Short-horned Grasshoppers. Clearly a pair of two-striped grasshoppers. Outstanding image!
