shed larval skins - Cucujus clavipes

shed larval skins - Cucujus clavipes
Mt. Washington, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
July 4, 2007
Size: 12 - 16 mm
These are some of the shed larval skins I found while stripping a dead, standing deciduous tree during my Forest Service-approved search for Py*tho str*ictus. I found 8 or 10 cucujid larvae under the bark.

(Although Pyt*ho larvae are supposed to live only under conifer bark I did discover one under the bark of a downed maple. Maybe it went for a hike and couldn't find its way back.)
