The male of N. californicus i
The male of N. californicus is not known at this point in time. Going on distribution records though I would be inclined to think this is either N. opacithorax or N. nigrescens the two most common southern California species of Neivamyrmex That is not to say this could not be N. californicus but we just dont know enough at this point. you can check out www.armyants.org for further

 
Gordon, even with the evident
Gordon, even with the evident reddish color on the gaster, this could be N. nigrescens? Here in the east, the males of the latter are solid black.

James Here in California apparently N. nigrescens is a bit more bi colored. It seems as if the western populations of N. nigrescens and texanus both are more prone to this coloration. Bugger something I should have discussed in the paper. Ahh well. something for another day.
