Ailanthus Webworm - Atteva aurea

Ailanthus Webworm - Atteva aurea
Pasadena, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
August 18, 2007
Size: ~30mm
I have two mature Ailanthus altissima trees in my backyard. The caterpillars seem to prefer the young trees that grow as suckers from the roots of the mature trees, as I don't see any webs in the mature trees. This is an image of a few individuals on one small tree. I believe the lighter ones are freshly molted and haven't darkened up yet.
