Uknown Dark-brown Widow-like spider - Steatoda grossa - female

Uknown Dark-brown Widow-like spider - Steatoda grossa - Female
Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 18, 2007
Size: Large pea
This large female was under a rock in the front yard. There were no distinctive marks on the abdomen, but she was in a location and had a web similar to those described for widows. We just moved to this location, so we have no frame of reference for the beasties in the area. We'd had some western black widows at our previous house, but those showed the hour glass, even if it wasn't red.
