Small White-backed Insect

Small White-backed Insect
Sitka County, Alaska, USA
August 17, 2007
Size: ~3mm
I belive this is an insect, as it seems to have six legs. Other than that, I have no idea what group it might be in. It was fairly small and at the base of a plant in a bog.

A second view more from the sided can be seen at:

ensign coccid?
What does anyone think of this?

That seems reasonable to me.
That seems reasonable to me. I wonder if it's possible to do better than family from the photos. Although mine looks similar to the one posted that you linked to, other photos I find on-line for this family do not look so similar.

some digging
I found a couple other pics online that make me think it is safe to move this to Ortheziidae. Check out this one from Iceland, this site in Korean, another in Iceland, another similar one in the same family.

Interesting
I'm subscribing to find out what happens to this one - you have such nice pictures of it, yet it's still a stumper. The only thing I can add is that it appears to have too many antenna segments to be a True Bug (Heteroptera). Beyond that I'm clueless - maybe a beetle??
