These flies were hooked up in a patch of asparagus. Mydas or Stratiomydas sp.?

Great find...and a new species for BugGuide!! This is actually one of the western species of Phyllomydas, with the male's very elongate and basally swollen clubs unique among mydids north of Mexico.

The female is even more glowing red than Stratiomydus lividus. And these lack the beige lateral thoracic vittae of Stratiomydas.
