Pretty Boy Floyd - Mallophora fautrix

Pretty Boy Floyd - Mallophora fautrix
Mason Park, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
August 20, 2007
On a recent robber fly post, someone commented with a note of sadness on the absence of common names for most of these distinctive creatures. Well, several such flies have received nicknames at this site, generally in reference to their resemblance to rock stars of the seventies.

I question such an approach, since we have so many famous robbers and related scofflaws in our country's rich history and am indeed proud to proclaim a candidate name for this particular individual.

it is such an awesome fly!!

Yes, and cooperative too.
It just plunked down next to me while I was looking for subjects, and it did that twice. I'm amazed at how approachable they are from the rear and back. However, come at them from the front, and they're gone!
