Vespula pensylvanica?
Reminds me of this Western yellow jacket, but I'm not totally sure. Someone with more knowledge can probably ID it with greater certainty.

Yes, Vespula pensylvanica, worker. I am not misspelling the species name, BTW.

Just a little more info for those without references

I recently discovered

Yellowjackets of America North of Mexico

and from that reference I see that pensylvanica is one of only two yellowjacket species in N. America to have the yellow on the face go right around the eye. The other is V. squamosa and that species has two medial-lateral yellow stripes on the scutum (top of thorax).
