not Lepidophora - Aldrichia

not Lepidophora - Aldrichia
Highland County, Virginia, USA
June 12, 2017
I gave it this title as when I saw it, I thought of that bombyliid, but the proboscis does not fit. Anyway, help appreciated. Perched in grassy meadow near woodland edge. Altitude about 3000 ft.

Thanks! I followed up on this first in MND where couplet 11 on P. 593 describes Aldrichia as "R2+3 arising from R4+5 at a right angle and close to crossvein R-M (Fig. 17). Then in the original species description by Painter 1939 (Trans. Kan. Acad. Sci.) he says "differs from A. ehrmanii in its darker wings, black pilose occiput, golden tomentose thorax, and in the proportions of the antenna." All of these can be made out in the photos, so seems certainly A. auripuncta.

Moved tentatively; awesome beast
