Size: Appx. 1 inch long
This beetle was out at 2 pm wandering the desert. It was fortunately less than 100 degrees F that afternoon.

Meloid beetle
I think from the three genera that were suggested, it is closest to the Phodaga, maybe albiceps. The elytra seemed to be somewhat flattened vertically.
