Leaf Beetle - Calligrapha scalaris

Size: ~9mm
My wife found this beetle in our garage. It had a problem with one of its legs and couldn't remain upright, nor did it try to retract its wings fully.

From browsing the BugGuide beetles, the closest ones I can find are the Calligrapha.

Calligraphy on a beetle back!
Nice picture! And yeah, I think it is of the genus Calligrapha. I'm sorry that I don't know the species... Nonetheless, really great pic!

I have found quite a few of these beetles on poison ivy, which I thought was pretty odd... I didn't see any eating the Toxicodendron though. Very colorful wings though, as this picture shows -- bright red!

I poked around the net and found a very similar photo here, which was idenfitied as Calligrapha multipunctata bigsbyana. It also looks a good bit like this other BugGuide image:
