Carolina grasshopper Dissosteira carolina - Dissosteira carolina

Carolina grasshopper Dissosteira carolina - Dissosteira carolina

large grasshoppers, fairly common at the refuge. Could this be a Melanoplus?

Band-winged Grasshopper
This is one of the band-winged group of grasshopper species, often distinquishable from a Melanoplus (all of which are spur-throated grasshoppers) by virtue of their (usually) larger, better developed wings and excellent flying ability. They're also often cryptically coloured and can appear rather drab at first glance, yet their inner wings and the inside surfaces of their 'thighs can be very colourful indeed and serve as great 'field marks' to identifying them as to species...if you can get them to show off said thighs and wings, that is. I suspect that what you've photographed here is a Carolina grasshopper or Dissosteira carolina, a common band-winged hopper found across North America. It's also one of the easiest species to ID if you can get it to flush and take note of its inner wing colouration--they'll be black with a very noticeable band of bright to pale yellow along the outer edge. Below is a picture taken by Dan L. Johnson of a bunch of Carolinas flying above a roadside. As you can see, that colouring is hard to miss!

Grasshopper
thanks a lot for your help and for the fascinating info on that web site. I did notice the bold flight pattern although it looked more like black and white to me. Thanks again
