Dragonhunter nymph - Hagenius brevistylus

Dragonhunter nymph - Hagenius brevistylus
Minett, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
June 26, 2007
Size: Compare with the ant
This bug was live and active on the ground, within 4 metres of the edge of a freshwater lake. It looks similar to abandoned dragonfly nymph shells I see often in the area, and to dragonfly nymph pictures I've seen, but it's a lot bigger and wider. Any help with ID appreciated.

Cool!
I had no idea dragonfly nymphs came out of the water!

Flattened nymph
Looks alot like the dragon nymph of the Dragonhunter, Hagenius.

Hagenius brevistylus, Dragonhunter looks right
Thanks, Herschel. Also, your short piece "Mama Hagenius versus the Head" is excellent - the episode is lively, memorable and helps to know the creature.

I dont think its a dragonfly nymph...
a dragonfly nymph wouldent be out of the water. I don't know what it is, though.

This is a dragonfly nymph, though not the one commonly seen. This is the kind found in fast moving water.
