Timema - Timema poppense - male - female

Timema - Timema poppense - Male Female
UCSC, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
June 1, 2017
Thought this was Timema californicum, but someone suggested it was T. knulli. Thanks for any help!

Timema poppense
The UCSC location; dark green lateral stripes; and mate-guarding pair...strongly suggest Timema poppense here. In their discussion of T. knulli, Vickery & Sandoval(2001) state:

"T. knulli is similar in color to the sexual T. poppensis(1) and its asexual relative T. douglasi. However, they differ in host plants, size, and shape of the male terminalia (Figs 11, 29). Additionally, T. knulli and these other two species do not overlap in geographical distribution. While T. knulli occurs only in the Santa Lucia range, in Monterey County, T. poppensis(1) and T. douglasi have a more northern distribution with southernmost limit at the Santa Cruz Mountains."
While the primary host for T. knulli is Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), the primary host plant of T. poppense is Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga mensiezii), though it may be occasionally found on Redwood as well. As you likely know, both trees are abundant at UCSC. But the apex of the left cercus in male T. poppense is appreciably "bulkier" than in T. knulli...an intimation of which appears in your photo. So altogether, I'm confident this pair is T. poppense.

Welcome to BugGuide, Caroline...hope you continue to find, photograph and post interesting insects here.
