Carabidae - Harpalus katiae

Carabidae - Harpalus katiae
Idylwild, Caroline County, Maryland, USA
June 24, 2017
Found dead on trail in very sandy area. Pardon the poor condition, but collected in case ID is possible for the record. Will include in next carabid batch to Curt Harden. Thanks as always.

update:
This voucher has been deposited in Carnegie Museum of Natural History collection.

Great!
Thanks for the update, Curt! Interested in more carabids this field season? By the way, I now have a stereo and compound microscope right next to my computer, so you can have me spot check some things directly before sending.

Harpalus katiae, a new record for MD
and a new northernmost record for the eastern U.S.! Previously known only as far north as southeastern Virginia. According to Kip Will's revision of the subgenus, this species likes sandy areas, so the habitat sounds perfect too.

I received this specimen from Bill and examined it under the scope. The head is entirely without small punctures, and the aedeagus has the characteristic spinules ventrally. Currently it resides in my collection (CWHC) as a photo voucher.

Thanks a lot for this really interesting record, Bill!

Harpalus katiae rec. n. MD
This new state record for Maryland is added to the post-2012 caraboid registry. Thank you for alerting us.

Thank you
We at MBP regularly extend what we can find as range maps. What's the best way to ensure we pass this sort of information on? Happy to coordinate what appear to be our most interesting records. You can also peruse our species list here:
https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewChecklist.php?order=Coleoptera.

We have 2,141 species of Coleoptera recorded in Maryland today, mostly from vetted photos, published records, and data from some Smithsonian folks like Warren Steiner. We have only ingested a tiny percentage of digitized collection data overall. We're always careful not to proclaim new state records for this reason (instead saying "new to MBP"), but we can note what strike us as more interesting range-wise. Please let us know if of interest.

Impressive inventory of Maryland Coleoptera!
Bill, the focus of my interest would your large set of caraboid species. Some new state records may be included there. Someone with lots of free time could cross check the Maryland Biodiversity list against the 2012 catalogue by Yves Bousquet plus the post-2012 caraboid registry. I suspect that the Maryland caraboids are already derived in part from Bousquet (2012). If you pop me an e-mail, I can send you a complete Maryland checklist of Caraboidea taken from the Bousquet catalogue in case you need it.

Yes, please!
And thank you. Yes, that Maryland list would be most welcome and we'd love to review and archive species from that source. We archive all available data at the record level and having species confirmed via multiple sources is always desirable. Thanks in advance!

MD Caraboid checklist sent to you.
Erratum: The very last date "18" with Zuphium americanum should be changed to "1831".

My pleasure
Thank you, Curt!

Moved from ID Request.

Thanks!
Much appreciated. I always like when an insect found dead like this can be a useful data point.

probably Harpalus caliginosus
assuming it's a big one

Thank you!
Yes, I should have included that. 22 mm.
