Mexigonus?
Hi Martha,
I'm from CA, so I'm not 100% sure on the species from Michigan, but from the pictures, this little spider resembles a Mexigonus species. They are earthy and have small hairs. Living in the forest, that would be why this one came to your wood bench. Maybe a Michigan member can verify their ID.
Have a great day!

Thank you
Thanks SpiderScientist,

All the members of the Mexigonus genus seem to be neatly caged in California. My yard is kind of woods and weeds. I had just seen this puppy for the first time yesterday, and was eager to see what it might be. It's the largest spider I've seen since Winter. I'll keep searching! I went through all the google images for brown jumping spider. And am patiently working through the BugGuide ones.

Thanks again, I'll let you know what or who this turns out to be!
