hornet nest
Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina, USA
August 25, 2007
Size: ?
This is hanging in a Bradford pear tree in my front yard. The hornets have white markings. What are they ? - baldface?
(As you may notice there are remnants of a firecracker stuck in the right side)

Moved
Moved from Sawflies, Horntails, and Wood Wasps. Not sure what happened there, apologies for multiple comments.

Yes....
It is most likely the bald faced hornet. I don't know of any other black and white hornet that builds aerial nests. (so why is there a firecracker in the nest?)

Bradford Pears...
Those things are the most fragile trees I've ever seen... We had three... they all have been knocked down due to storms... I'm surprised it's sturdy enough to hold a heavy hornet's nest...:D

pear tree
Yes, very fragile, especially in ice storms.
What you can't see is that I have the 6 main shoots all wired together. I believe this has saved it through may storms when my nieghbor's were split. They are breading stronger versions now such as the Cleveland pear.

Some large hornet nests can get very heavy....
some day the branch might break!!(watch out below!)
