Mrs. Smoky comes up for air - Hetaerina titia - NABA International Butterfly Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA May 18, 2007
I spotted a pair of Smoky Rubyspots in tandem though my binoculars, while leading a group from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History along the Rio Grande in the NABA park. As I watched, the female crawled down a stem until completely submerged to lay eggs! The male released her and stood watch from a perch comfortably above the water. By the time I could set up my spotting scope and get her in focus, she was already done ovipositing and returning to the surface. She then re-joined the male in tandem and they flew off together.
