I had been lamenting that I had no live shots of this recent family addition to bugguide. It was a foolish lament. In organizing my unposted scaraboid images from last year's (Aug. 2006) collecting trip to southern New Mexico I discovered quite a few ochodaeid images, including several alert, live shots that better reveal the personality of these little guys. One of the family characteristics is the pilose (furry) ball shape formed by the closed-but-not-retracted lamellae (flat projections of the last few antenna segments). In this case the lamellae are opened in full exploratory mode.

Came to UV lights on greasewood/mesquite/cactus incline below jagged spires of the Organ Mountains.
