Sphinx Moth Caterpillar - Manduca sexta

Sphinx Moth Caterpillar - Manduca sexta
Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 26, 2007
Size: 3 inches
I think that this is a White Lined Sphinx Moth caterpillar (as I have only commonly seen the adult in LA city), but I am not sure and would like an expert opinion. I found this last night feeding on my chili plants (a super-hot variety), but obviously quite an attractive host plant for this caterpillar.

Many thanks in advance,
Jon.

Not the white-lined sphinx
look in our guide here and you'll see that caterpillar looks quite unlike this. I believe this is Manduca sexta. Peppers are in the nightshade family, which fits for that species, too.

Manduca sexta
Dear Hannah,

Many thanks for your response - the Manduca sexta seems a much more appropriate i.d. for this caterpillar.

Jon.
