Eristalis tenax ?? - Hemyda aurata

Eristalis tenax ?? - Hemyda aurata
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
August 26, 2007
Size: about 12 mm
While I was staring mindlessly at our corn plants, trying to figure out how to get a better shot of the Dolichopodids that I see there most days, this guy lit right in front of me for a drink of water. Only stayed long enough for me to fire two frames, but fortunately they are in reasonably good focus. I'm guessing Eristalis tenax based on photos on BugGuide and (1).

Moved
Moved from Phasiinae.

Tachinidae
Subfamily Phasiinae.

Wow
This is a cool fly! I've never seen one before, so I don't know what it is, but I do know that it is not E. tenax. Take a look here for E. tenax.

You're right
This afternoon I just photographed what I believe is a real Eristalis tenax 140189. So I wonder what this strange little guy is.
