Size: less than an inch
I took a picture but was afraid to pick it up. It reminded me of the buck moth cats that sting. This was an early instar of whatever it is.

appears to be
a very dark Red Admiral caterpillar. The ones in this family don't sting, but they look like they ought to be able to.
