Carpenter Ant - Camponotus modoc - female

Carpenter Ant - Camponotus modoc - Female
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
August 25, 2007
Size: 13mm
I wasn't going to post these, but I was looking at Camponotus and noticed that my images have reddish legs and what appears to be a golden pubescence on the gaster.
So is this Camponotus modoc?
They were hollowing out a piece of driftwood at Seahurst Beach, high up on the beach above the salt spray zone.

Camonotus modoc - workers
They are using this piece of drifwood as their new nest. Even above the salt spray zone, this is a hazardous localization, I agree with you this could not last for very long, especially if violent storms occur this winter.

Thank you!
I'm glad I decided to post these, after all.
