Bungee jumping spider - Sassacus vitis

Bungee jumping spider - Sassacus vitis
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
August 26, 2007
When the bee got about a millimeter or so closer, the spider launched herself right at it. The spider missed, and at the end of her travel, she was snapped back to the stem of the plant by a strand of web.

At the same site, I've seen spiders glide - much like flying squirrels - from one leaf to another, but realized only recently that they were using web to do so. This is the first time I've seen one use the technique to capture prey. (Maybe this is all very ordinary, but it was certainly fun to watch.)
