Found on ground in coastal scrub (Lupinus arboreus, Bacharis)

Very similar to:

Silphidae.
Hate to break it to you, but that is the larva of a carrion beetle in the family Silphidae. Do hope you washed your hands....:-)

Thanks to your help last June I identified Heterosilpha ramosa adults in the same area. So now I know the larva too. Thanks again!
