I use a point-n-shoot too, and recently have been shooting the "tiny" beetles by reversing a 50mm SLR lens in front of the p-n-s (which is zoomed to max tele). Give it a try if you have an old film camera lens laying around.

I actually have a little lens that was made specifically to slide onto the end of my Canon S70's lens. I thought it was a great idea, but since it only has one focal depth, keeping the subject in range is very challenging!
