Muscid Fly - female

Muscid Fly - Female

Curse of the Flies - yet another Dipteric display of denied designation diagnosis.

Not even sure what family this fellow is. Even more unfortunately he didn't stick around long enough for me to get more than just the first shot off. :(

You poor things (goes for Kevin and the fly)!
I'm about 90% sure this is a muscid and 95% sure that's as good an ID as you'll get, here and now. Assuming I remember correctly, these flies and tachinids are in a state of flux, with no end in sight. (Recently, I read a book published in 1941, and it had a similar tale of woe.)

Interesting forum. Thanks for the link. While I can't say I "love" flies, especially certain orders, my respect for them has gone up *IMMENSELY*. They used to be my least favorite insects, but I'm starting to realize how truly diverse they are, and how amazing and beautiful they (some of them anyway) are! :)

I'll continue to grab photos as it seems there are more flies around my yard than any other order I've encountered so far. And down the road, I'll hope for an expert and try to *become* a little more educated myself!
