Porch spider

Porch spider
Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 28, 2017
Small spider? Spiderling of larger species? The best I can come up with is maybe Neoscona arabesca, but I'm really just guessing. Any ideas? Front porch web about 4 feet off the ground, stretching about 3 foot by 3 foot. Suburban garden with lots of native plants between Boston and the Middlesex Fells. The prey item was a gnat that was rotating around my head before misjudging its orbit, if that helps give you a size reference.

The young ones are tough
but maybe Araneus diadematus?

That is an excellent idea! T
That is an excellent idea! Thanks. I'll have to see if I can get a few clearer shots as it grows, assuming the birds don't get it.
