Parson spider
http://www.spiderwebwatch.org/spiders/Herpyllus_ecclesiasticus
says that west of the divide it's usually H. propinquus, but I can't find a picture of that one to compare. Do you have one?

Parson Spider
I don't see what is parson-like or ecclesiastical about it, do you?

I just searched the web
but didn't find a reason. I was wondering the same myself. Perhaps the white markings on black are reminiscent of a priest's collar?

I don't,
sorry! I'm in the east. ;-)
