Yellow Underwing - Noctua pronuba

Yellow Underwing - Noctua pronuba
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
July 19, 2004
Found hiding under the cover to our grill.

Noctua pronuba?
It's a close call but my guess is that this is one of the variations of the Large Yellow Underwing. I think the forewing of Xestia smithii would show less contrast than seen in your image (i.e. the dark marks along the bottom of the reniform spot and where the subterminal line meets the costa wouldn't be as bold, and the area bordering the basal half of the costa wouldn't be as pale or extensive). Too bad you didn't see the hindwings; that would have clinched it. Here's a comparison of both. The live MPG plate shows several more examples.
