Paint It Black - Limenitis archippus

Paint It Black - Limenitis archippus
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
August 31, 2007
When I first spotted this Butterfly, my thoughts were, "Monarch." But, it flew up and landed on a tree about eye-level and as I got closer to it, I could tell my first impression was wrong. I had just seen another Viceroy about 10 minutes previously and here was another. The thing that threw me was the almost total lack of the post-medial black line along the back of the Butterfly. I saw one last year about this time with that same black line totally absent.
