Orient Point/Orient Beach State Park, Suffolk County, New York, USA
August 30, 2007
Size: 5mm +/-
On sand and cobble area with misc. vegetation, set back from bay beach.
Note apparent "fuzz" on elytra.
Active - hard to photograph.

In bugguide . . .
it is a subfamily of Melyridae. The array of genera your beetle possibly belongs to is wider than the two named by Francesco.
Yours seems to be a female, and in them, genus placement is always difficult (many genera based on male sexual characters).

Malachiidae
It's a Soft-winged Flower Beetle, genus Anthocomus or Malachius.
