Red-headed Meadow Katydid - Orchelimum erythrocephalum - male

Red-headed Meadow Katydid - Orchelimum erythrocephalum - Male
American Tobacco Trail north of Scott King Road, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 1, 2004
Male climing up a grass stem and stridulating. Note how the wings are raised, apparently to form a resonant cavity. The head is rather more of a faded red than in some other specimens I've seen.

This series shows a male stridulating, eating some grass seeds, and detail of the cerci.
