Bucculatrix ainsliella
Hi,
I am in fact convinced that Bucculatrix 1487 is the real B. ainsliella. We studied this species extensively after its introduction in Europe and it is easily recognised by the large black blotch and the irregular black banding of the antennal tips. These characters were also described by Braun. See our paper in Nota Lepidopterologica here http://science.naturalis.nl/nieukerken or http://www.repository.naturalis.nl/document/462274
The photos of ainsliella on the MPG are all misidentified, probably canadensisella.

Erik

Thank You!!!
Dr. Nieukerken, thank you so much for sorting this out for us and also for all the identifications on our Nepticulidae images. I really appreciate the assistance and hope you will continue to share your expertise with us.

Review of Bucculatrix ainsliella
Terry Harrison conducted an expert review of Bucculatrix ainsliella images on BugGuide at Bob Patterson's request. Terry's determination is that all current BG photos of this species should remain at genus level. Species level identification of B. ainsliella, as well as other Bucculatrix, is nearly impossible from photos alone. Dissection and/or DNA is needed.

Terry also concluded that this moth and the moths shown below are possibly related and represent an undetermined Bucculatrix species.

I think this is Bucculatrix ainsliella based on images at BOLD. However, Covell's guide has photos of both B. canadensisella and B. ainsliella with descriptions and the two are reversed. I don't know which is in error.
