Clearwing and Skipper mating? - Hemaris diffinis

Clearwing and Skipper mating? - Hemaris diffinis
St Albans, Kanawha County, West Virginia, USA
August 17, 2017
I'm a nature photographer, but not well versed in IDing insects. I was photographing Clearwings on a butterfly bush in my neighborhood and happened upon a Clearwing and a Skipper that appeared to be mating. Is this unusual or even possible?

I put a link into the Remarks section of the info page, just in case an expert has something more to tell us about this behavior. I'm not sure of the gender of either one of them.
Cliff, if you know of more images like this, then I suggest that you put together a forum article and then link a comment here. Also, please let us know the identity of the Skipper, if you know it, thanks!

Totally Awesome Find !
Wow, jaw-dropping amazing nature capture! :-O

How cool is that to come across and get photos of, so crazy and completely unexpected. Candidates for photo of the year!

It will be extremely interesting to see what the experts have to weigh in about on this cross mating.

I wish you were on Flickr so I could invite this fantastic series of images into my Insect Hump Day group!

Congrats are in order. ;-)

Fascinating!
I've never seen anything like it. Thanks for sharing! Question is, where in the guide does it go?

A good question.
It would appear to me that we need a page that shows species interactions. There are many images that show multiple species interacting which need a multi species guide page.

I've heard of intergeneric mating in moths, but never interfamily
Super cool! Definitely worth keeping. I've shared it to the "Moths of the Eastern United States" Facebook page so an expert might see it and add some comments.

Fascinating!
and Wecome! We can't wait to hear the answer to this. That skipper has big dreams!
You're just a couple counties away from Stephen Cresswell who has been a longtime BugGuide contributor
