pool ant - Tetramorium immigrans

pool ant - Tetramorium immigrans
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
August 18, 2017
Size: "less than a cm"
This ant has been covering the pool of a friend for days now; I know it's a horrible photo (cellphone). I suspect a soldier based on the jaws, but I'm confused by the red on all three segments - I've not found a local ant with red on the abdomen. Suggestions are welcome. (I may have to drive to her place to collect one...) Additional notes: she's had the pool for 17 years but this ant has been covering her pool only the last two years. This year was exceptionally high in rainfall, and another friend has had Formica fusca on her pool this year but not before. I've a sort-of-natural pond, my neighbour has an inground pool; neither of us have seen a single ant on the surface and have been here for over a decade; I have 8 ant species resident (http://johnsankey.ca/gardenhym.html).

better photos
My apologies Steven - I visited my friend and collected a specimen to get better photos, then forgot to post them.
